Why Can’t Teeth Heal Themselves?
Megan Thielking recently published an article on the interesting topic of “Why Can’t Teeth Heal Themselves”? Here’s what she had to say: Getting a cavity is an unpleasant experience — and a painful reminder that teeth, unlike bones, can’t heal themselves once they’re damaged. Cavities are the product of this tug-of-war that’s happening every day in our mouths. According to a dentist from a family dentistry and pediatric dental clinic, acid from sugary, starchy foods wears down the super-hard minerals that form the enamel of our teeth. Saliva lowers the pH in our mouths and helps build that enamel back up. According to a general dentistry dentist, when there’s too much sugar for the saliva to contend with a cavity forms And once your tooth has eroded, there aren’t any living cells to swoop in and undo the damage. In the new episode of Boddities, I investigate how teeth get harmed and why they can’t heal — watch here.
